Blog: What I Learned From Rock & Roll-Part 1

By Anthony Kroeker

I spent years of my life, before Jesus playing bass guitar traveling around on tour with a band.

I thought I had wasted so much time, but many of the lessons I learned from that lifestyle are becoming

helpful in ministry. So, I want to share some of the lessons with you:

1 Corinthians 12:17-20

If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear,

where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.

If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.

You cannot have a band full of lead singers or lead guitar players

Not everyone plays at every moment. Nothing screams “horrible band” more than everyone playing everything all at the same time. No one in the crowd cares how fast you all play your guitars if it sounds like someone stuffed cats in a bag and is letting them fight it out. You can't take the stage sounding like you are all playing different songs. The entire point of making music is creating a harmonious sound.

How we work together:

When the band would write songs, somehow we all knew what was needed. Sometimes, the need was for me to sit out for the better of the sound. Other times, my part was needed for the whole band to shine.  But still, people were looking at the band as a whole and not as individual members. If one did need to shine for a moment, we allowed it for the better of the band. But we all had to remember that big egos just made for big messes.

Everyone in your church has different skills

and there are different times that those skills are called upon.

In the church, there will be times that particular leaders will need to take center stage, but nothing says “pride and dysfunction” more then everyone fighting for the microphone or for control. If a bunch of non-Christian musicians can understand that concept, why can't the Church embrace it? What would happen if we neglected this lesson? Imagine if everyone fought all the time for total control and for their agenda and for their opinion because it made them feel more important? We would have no harmony and would not be acting as the body with all its parts. We would not be acting as the body with all its parts and there would be no harmony.
